The localization team of one of the world’s leading online platforms, Khan Academy, has developed an online training course for educators — Khan Academy for Educators. The course aims to inspire educators to integrate Khan Academy into their teaching practices as an innovative and effective learning tool and to introduce the key ideas behind the platform. The localization project is being implemented by the KSE Foundation in collaboration with faculty and students from KSE University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

The new free training course, Khan Academy for Educators, provides an in-depth introduction to Khan Academy, including its content, tools for teachers and students, and best practices for implementing technology in work with schoolchildren. The course is available in Ukrainian and is designed for teachers of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, as well as for tutors and private instructors.

Khan Academy for Educators is divided into two educational modules. The first module covers the psychophysiology of learning and provides an overview of how Khan Academy is structured and how to work with it. The second module explores the practical use of the platform, opportunities for personalization, and the competency-based, interdisciplinary, and integrated approaches in education promoted by Ukraine’s New Ukrainian School reform. It also covers SMART goals and the assessment system used in Khan Academy. Both modules include quizzes and small homework assignments.

Participants can choose between two modes of participation: an active mode with a certificate for 15 hours of professional development, or an auditing mode for 4 academic hours.

The course, which includes online Zoom sessions, will take place on weekends from May 7 to May 21 (specifically on May 10–11 and May 17–18 at 12:00 p.m.). The course will be conducted in a flipped classroom format, where pre-class study of materials is mandatory. It will include activities such as introductory tasks, experience-sharing, and reflections, as well as a final project to apply the skills gained during the course. Additionally, the updated course version features a more transparent grading system through “energy cookie” points. Participants who successfully complete the course will receive professional development certificates.

One of the added advantages of the Khan Academy platform, highlighted during the course, is that any registered user designated as a teacher can create a class, invite students, assign tasks, and track their progress. Khan Academy also integrates with Google Classroom and Microsoft Teams.

Since May of last year, the Khan Academy localization team has adapted educational materials into Ukrainian, including lesson notes, quizzes, and recorded video lessons for 13 educational courses in mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, and economics. The list of courses already available on uk.khanacademy.org includes: Algebra Basics, Arithmetic, Precalculus, Basic Geometry and Measurement, Algebra 2, Pre-Algebra, Early Math, High School Statistics, High School Geometry, High School Biology, High School Chemistry, High School Physics, and two topics from Microeconomics. In total, this amounts to over 600 lessons and 160 hours of recorded video content.

Registration for the Khan Academy for Educators course will be limited and will open on April 28 at khanforeducators.org.ua.
