This April marks the first anniversary of the launch of the Ukrainian localization of Khan Academy, one of the world’s leading online educational platforms. Over the past year, 12 general education subjects in mathematics, chemistry, biology, and economics have been translated into Ukrainian, with more than 70 specialists from various fields contributing at different stages. The project is being implemented by the KSE Foundation in partnership with faculty and students from KSE University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA), and the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

The localization journey began on April 1, 2024, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Khan Academy, under which KSE committed to localizing all of their STEM courses. By early May, the localization team—comprising students and faculty from KSE, Taras Shevchenko University, and NaUKMA—began recording the first course, “Algebra Basics.” Its release followed just a month later, on June 30. By early September, two more courses had been localized: “Arithmetic” and “Precalculus.”

In addition, over the past year, the team has translated nine more educational courses into Ukrainian: “Early Math,” “Pre-Algebra,” “Algebra 2,” “High School Statistics,” “High School Geometry,” “Basic Geometry and Measurement,” “High School Biology,” “High School Chemistry,” and two topics from the “Microeconomics” course. This work represents more than 165 hours of content creation, including 1,888 videos and 3,532,548 translated words.

Notably, during its first year, the localization team launched the official Instagram page @khanacademy.ukrainian, where updates on new courses and learning opportunities from Khan Academy Ukraine are shared. In February 2025, the Ukrainian language was officially integrated into the Khan Academy mobile app. As a result, all educational content on uk.khanacademy.org and in the app is now fully accessible in Ukrainian, including video lessons, notes, quizzes, and practice exercises. Importantly, all lessons and materials can be downloaded in advance and accessed offline.

The first year of Khan Academy’s Ukrainian localization was full of milestones. Highlights include participation in KSE’s charitable “Run for Freedom” race, the team’s move from a shelter at KSE to a spacious, sound-optimized office, the first televised interview with localization project coordinator Taras Pavlov on the “DIM” TV channel, and much more.

We are proud of the team and wish them even more achievements and localized courses for Ukrainian schoolchildren!
