Khan Academy currently offers three courses in Ukrainian — arithmetic, algebra basics, and precalculus — all of which are short video lessons, notes, and tests.
KSE Foundation team, with students and teachers of Kyiv School of Economics, localizes the Khan Academy distance education platform. More than 70 specialists are involved in implementing the project: translators, dubbing actors, auditors, editors, pre- and post-production specialists, methodologists, and volunteers.
“Our work is a little more than just translation. We call it localization because we adapt the style of explanations and terminology to Ukrainian realities, and re-record the video, says Taras Pavlov, the coordinator of the localization process of Khan Academy in Ukraine. “At the same time, we try to preserve the essence of the platform — the naturalness of the explanations, the call to curiosity, and the careful encouragement of students to try.”
Fundraising began in May of this year, and thanks to the contributions of benefactors, the project team has already translated more than 2 million words, voiced and adapted more than 70 hours of videos for the courses “Arithmetic,” “Algebra Basics,” and “Precalculus.” There are plans to localize more than 5,000 STEM lessons, as well as interactive notes and tests for them, into Ukrainian.
“We want to make STEM education available in Ukraine so that every child has access to the best educational materials anywhere and at any time,” comments Maryna Borysenko, deputy director for the humanitarian projects of KSE Foundation. – Localization of the Khan Academy online platform in Ukrainian is our contribution to the educational future of Ukraine.”
