The Khan Academy “Mathematics textbook for grades 5–6” has received a positive decision from the expert commission and official approval from the Ukrainian Institute of Educational Development (UIRO) — “Approved for use in the educational process.”

This means that the materials can now be officially implemented in Ukrainian schools. The initiative and coordination of the Khan Academy localization project in Ukraine is led by the KSE Foundation, with implementation supported by faculty and students from KSE University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and National Aviation University.

The portfolio of localized educational resources from Khan Academy, one of the world’s leading online learning platforms, has now been expanded with the UIRO-certified digital mathematics textbook for grades 5–6. The content fully meets the requirements of the state standard of basic secondary education.

The course helps students develop mathematical, critical, and systemic thinking, while also teaching them how to organize their own learning and use digital technologies safely. The “Mathematics. Grades 5–6” course, presented as a digital textbook, consists of 12 sections that comprehensively cover the foundational knowledge of mathematics defined by the national standard.

The program includes the following topics:

  • sets;

  • natural numbers;

  • fractions (with like and unlike denominators), decimals, and percentages;

  • expressions and formulas;

  • divisibility;

  • ratios and proportions;

  • rational numbers;

  • measurement and geometry;

  • statistics and probability;

  • coordinates.

The digital textbook offers an innovative learning format. Each section contains video lessons with theory explanations, worked examples, interactive exercises and quizzes, step-by-step solution hints, and final assessments. The textbook also features a “User Guide” video to help students navigate the learning process easily.

Some sections of the course (e.g., “Sets” and “Statistics”) go beyond the model curricula and can be used as additional resources — for math clubs or preparation for the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT). The assignments also integrate examples from Ukrainian history, literature, and sports — including texts about Taras Shevchenko and Elina Svitolina — making the learning experience more engaging and relevant for today’s students.

The textbook is already available on the official website uk.khanacademy.org/math and in the free mobile app (App Store and Google Play). Importantly, courses can be accessed offline after downloading the materials in advance.

The Khan Academy localization project in Ukraine aims to ensure equal access to quality education for all Ukrainian school students and teachers. Over the past year, 16 courses in general subjects — including mathematics, chemistry, biology, physics, economics, and geography — have been translated. Experts from various fields — professors, researchers, students, editors, and volunteers — are engaged in the localization process.
