The Kyiv School of Economics community, at the initiative of family members, friends, and KSE faculty, is establishing memorial scholarships in honour of members of our community who lost their lives in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Memory shapes society, and it is our shared responsibility to preserve and nurture the memory again of the fallen for future generations. To understand the value — and to remember the price.

Although Ruslan was three years younger than me, I never felt it — we were always equals. Even when, as children, we went into the mountains together, sometimes even during thunderstorms, I never felt afraid and always felt calm because Ruslan was there. He loved to joke, but never mocked others — more often he laughed at himself to lift his friends’ spirits. Ruslan was a source of support for many of us, and later became a pillar for all Ukrainians. After one of the encirclements in the spring of 2022, he told me how he and his brothers-in-arms, having taken off their body armour, carried wounded comrades through the Donetsk forests all night long. That is Ruslan in a nutshell: he supports, encourages, and never leaves anyone behind.
For a while, we ended up in the same metro carriage almost every day after work. I needed to get off earlier than he did. But he always, regardless of the weather or how tired he was, walked me home, and then walked all the way to his own place. I scolded him and asked him not to waste an hour of his time, when he could be home in ten minutes by metro instead of trudging through snow and rain — but I never managed to convince him. I would give half my life for one more walk like that.
I remember our first meeting in 2021. Iryna wrote that she preferred meeting “in person” because it felt much warmer than exchanging emails. And every meeting we had — both in person and online — truly was warm. In 2022, Iryna decided to shift her focus and study national memory policy. She tried to read between rotations, but in 2023 she wrote that she still needed to be more present at the front, because “it feels strange to work on national memory if, at a historic moment for the country, I am not fighting for it.” In 2024, she planned to finally complete the work she had begun… but now others are doing it for her.
